The South Beach Diet really doesn’t have a long, drawn out history like so many fad diets do.

Many don’t actually consider this a fad diet as South Beach Diet food can actually be extremely healthy for the body, and while it may not give the results of weight loss as touted or desired, it can assist you in living an overall healthier lifestyle.

The Birth of the South Beach Diet

Arthur Agatston, a cardiologist in the Miami, Florida area, is credited with the development of the diet, which is one of the most recent crazes to hit the diet market. Along with the Atkins Diet, these two weight loss solutions have definitely been among the most popular in recent years, with books and foods hitting the shelves under the South Beach Diet name. As a cardiologist, Dr. Agatston decided it was necessary to create a diet regimen for his patients that was beneficial for cardiac abnormalities.

After a diligent study of scientific dieting research, Agatston believed he had the answer for his patients. His diet plan was based around the emphasis of eating “good” carbs and “good” fats and avoiding those that were “bad”. How can you tell a good food from a bad one? Much like other physicians, Agatston was aware that the consumption of saturated fats in large quantities could lead to heart diseases and other cardiovascular illnesses and conditions. Bad fats also include trans fat. Bad carbs are those that are high on the glycemic index, meaning that they negatively affect the ability of the body to utilize insulin to process glucose and create energy. This can lead to a future of diabetes and heart disease.

For this reason, Arthur Agatston’s diet emphasized his patients consuming higher quantities of good carbs, or those that ranked low on the index and were easier for the body to break down. Along with this, he promoted using good fats – unsaturated fats and omega-3 oils that provide essential nutrients that are found in fats, without the negative side effects of high cholesterol, blood clots, clogged arteries, and other cardiovascular problems. Because symptoms were reduced in his own patients, Agatston was motivated to further share the success.

The South Beach Diet took off among the general population with the publication of a book by the same name, mostly due to the fact that reducing carb and fat intake overall leads to weight loss, and the body’s ability to more easily utilize those lead to greater energy among those using the diet.

Because of the popularity of the diet and the name recognition, Kraft Foods licensed the name to create a line of South Beach Diet food, which was reported to have the properties specified by the restrictive diet. Many of these items are available at the regular grocery store, with labels like “South Beach Diet approved.” Since then, the idea of the South Beach Diet has become a household name, and more and more people have achieved successful weight loss, weight management, and transition to a healthy lifestyle.
